seriously serioulsy seriously sick fishing in Montauk. ONe the best Albacore years I have ever seen and the Bass are cranking almost every single daylight hour. Big fish too. not the usual blitz schoolies but all keeper fish with 36" inchers caught and much bigger seen.
Columbus day is past, most everyone has gone home and the albies look to be here for the duration. My guess is potentially Nov 1st considering the vast amounts of bait still here, warm water and calm seas overall. Some wind now but still very warm out. ITs very cool to be a part of such an epic year.
Gonna stay a bit longer and had a few last minute cancellations in anyone want to get in on it.
Looking forward to Jamaica Bay for Nov/Dec and bluefin tunas!!!

wicked pissa flats action the last bunch of days!! found this spot that has very cold, clear water with lots of fish that eat!!! love it love it love it.
Have 3 days this week free and then that is it for flats fishing for the year as I am going to Maine for a week and then Ptown for tuna. very sad as this is my favorite fishing there is!!

just a quick update on what it happening across Long Island.

Flats-I have been fishing this almost exclusively. Many of the spots are warming up but I have been fortunate enough to have some very solid and fishy spots. especially this one from yesterday.

Very cold, clear water and lots and lots of fish. Some very big ones as well with the biggest I have seen all year. Course they seem to show up when you already have a smaller one hooked up! Have a few days left open for this before I go to maine for a week. probably be done after that, so if you want any flats fishing, now through July 8th is going to be it.

Northfork Deep Water

Had some good fishing and bad fog a few days ago off the Northfork in the big boat. Although this fish was caught on a jig, there are alot of big fish here now and can be caught on fly and plug. This fish was 29 pounds and one of a bunch of bass and giant bluefish.

Southfork

Word is the Bass fishing is very good in Montauk and spots nearby. Big fish as well. I dont know if it is good sign for the bass population, but the majority of the fish are very big. I will have the big boat in Montauk after this weekend and am available for Bass, possible Bluefin (which are being caught all down the south shore) and soon enough Green Bonito/Mahi/etc.. within the next 2 or 3 weeks around the islands. Drop me a line if you will be around and have any questions.

Hoping for a fun summer and look forward to hearing from you to fish or just to chat fishing. I will have 3 boats available this summer and fall. Northfork/Orient, Montauk and JBay. If there are any hardtails showing up in any of these spots, I will be getting on them!!!

Sexed Up Happy Fish Making For a Stellar June of Flats Fishing.

After a minorly sluggish start, the season is officially in full swing as we are finding hungry fish that are eating flies really well on a daily basis. Even on overcast days, we are finding groups of fish up against likely shorelines and occasionally taking some larger specimens. We haven't broken the 20# mark yet this year but we are certainly seeing them on a daily basis. Talk about buck fever, these logs moving down the shoreline will make you knees rattle as you attempt to ready yourself for the cast. Just yesterday we found a group of fish in the skinny, skinny water, just flopping around tailing and having a grand old time. Coolest moment of the season thus far.

Water temps are still ideal with readings in the upper 60's yesterday. Availability moving forward is spotty but some dates are still available so feel free to call or email me ay lionthefly@optonline.net or 212.495.9062

holy cow are the bass big this year and literally everywhere. The flats ave tons of fish and Jbay/nj has been on fire the last week and shows no sign of abating as they are stretched way south in NJ.

Had a busmans holiday today and fished a few hours with Capt. Andrew Derr. Some big fish and very hungry after the last 2 days of rain and clouds. Here are a few we took photos of.

anyway, hope everyone is getting on em and if you want to get out, I can fish both JBay or the flats out east the next few weeks.

Well, after some fear and worry, based on a very slow spring in Jamaica Bay, the Stripers seem to be in top force and thick just about anywhere you go. George Polsky as been out 4 times in the last week at Breezy and has gotten atleast a 20 pounder everytime. I will attach a photo here of his son Ollie who hooked a monster on his new all-in-one starter flyfishing kit.
Montauk is showing serious fish up to the mid40 lb range both from shore and boat.
I personally just finished 5 glorious days in a row on the flatsboat in Greenport. Luck brought us sun the whole week and tons of shots and lots of hooked/landed fish. They got pickier as the week went on as the winds become less and less but it was probably the best week of sight-fishing ive ever head out here. For this, I feel very fortunately.
So, where do we go from here. I can fish any of the east end short of Montauk as my big boat isnt ready, and can also fish Jbay out of the Regulator. Your wish is my command, as I have a few days free this week and looks to be sun until the weekend...

oh man, when the weather finally changed and the sun came out, the flats were covered in Bass. Bass of all sizes and shapes. Never push overs, we finally figured out the formula and got it dialed in. This is by far my favorite fishing of the year. I messed up my schedule somehow and I ended up with tuesday-friday free this week. Seems to me a time tat is not to be missed if you like the challenge and satisifaction of hooking a Bass in a foot of water. God, knows this fishing does not last as the water warms. Much easier than getting to the hamptons, the northfork is a dream to fish out of.

Well, with record snows (good for spring water quality) I had to get away. Costa Rica was the place. El Nina seems to be gripping the Pacific so with 3 days of offshore fishing, the upshot was 2 Blue Marlin Hooked on fly (about 200 lbs) and ZERO landed. Here are some photos anyway!

Few things to update, but first of all the fishing!!

With the weather this time of year, it is not always easy to figure out the fishing. One thing is for certain, tho, The bass are hot and heavy around the NY bight. Was out day before yesterday and you couldn't decide which school to fish on. They were picky but eating when we fed them how and what they wanted. And for whatever reason, they are finally getting here from Montauk. I plan to fish a few days a week until mid-month so if you have any interest in doing a half day either in the morning or afternoon, give me a ring.

Although these photos are almost a week old, I needed to post them as Jeff is super cool and got on em good, and also because I havent brought my camera the last few days, and the fish have been smaller. Quantitatively, though, we must of caught over 50 or 60 fish today at Breezy and around. Beautiful, sunny and flat as a mill pond. There were Bluefin not too far offshore but the guys were down with the Stripes so we stayed inshore. If you are into trying for the Bluefin which have been ranging from 80-150 pounds, I am definately game. In the meantime the Stripes have been solid and the swell has finally laid down. What a crazy stalled storm that lasted over a week! Ping me if you want to get out some time this week as winds are going to be good all round.

Montauk Still Brimming With Bass and Rainbait

This season has been considered by many to be the best fishing season in ages and it is still on cruise control. The bass fishing has been simply outstanding with huges schools of bass feeding on top throughout large parts of both incoming and falling tides. The waters around Montauk Point are still littered with big orange/brown rafts of rainbait. It is amazing the amount of bait that is there right now and the fish are gorging themselves on it. Equally as amazing is the fact that the bait has sustained itself so well this late into the Fall, furiously fueling what has been a legitimately epic bass season.

This has been hands down the best Fall I have ever experienced. Still going strong and I hate to leave. I will be here until atleast the 26th but have a few days free until then. Notably this coming weds/fri and sat. (20,22 and 23)
Was very suprised to see rafts and rafts of Bass very close to the inlet on Thursday. Usually by this time they are marching way down the beach west. In this case they were doing both. pretty cool shit. Not small fish either.
As far as the rest of the season, I will be heading west to Jamaica Bay/Coney Island and plan to fish until just befrore Christmas depending on the temps. Last year we had a full month of Bluefin Tuna, very close to the dock. Worst case, the miles and miles of Bass we have had at Montauk will be back west very soon.
I can do very easy mornings starting at 7 and be done by 11 or so.. ping me if you have any questions.

Hi All!,
What can I say? This pictures says much of what needs to be said.
The enormous schools of bay anchovies, more like an oil spill in appearance, is nothing short of ridiculous.
The miles and miles of Striped Bass that are pounding these dense baitfish schools, leaves mere words seem so pointless.
As you can see in this photo, everyone is sharing in this experience. Save for the handful of unitiated and inexperienced boaters, this is literally sublime.
The downside, honestly, is that there are very few False Albacore are about. The few we have seen in the last handful of days have been very difficult to feed. Boo Hoo! No one seems to care! I personally do not think they are gone for the year BTW

Montauk Redbone Bass Blitz 9/24/10 & Fall Update

Montauk has been fishing extremely well lately despite rough conditions. Albie bites are worlds better than this time last year, with people catching them into the teens on good days. Bass blitzes throughout the day with fish ranging well above 30" have been the norm. The video above was one of countless blitzes during Day 2 of the Redbone Tournament. It was quite an amazing day, best of the Fall so far, for sure.

Thing are in full swing and luckily the boat turn out has not been bad. Oodles of rainbait for Bass Boils and Albies mania! I have an empty last minute spot on Tom Colicchio's boat for Redbone. Will be filmed for ESPN 2011 Spring airing (might end up on Outdoor Network) Is a really fun time and Tom is an excellent guy, fisherman and is bringing his beutiful 26 regulator to fish from. I am mostly full until mid october but there are other boats open, and do have a few single days here and there (Sept 25, 29,30 Oct 4, 14, 19, etc..)

Montauk fishing has opened up wide since Earl's big bark and little bite rolled out of town. Bass blitzes and raging albies have been daily occurrences. Rainbait is balled up so thick right now, the fish are eating great. Flies, soft plastics, metals, bucktails... you name it, they are eating it. Weds, Thurs, Friday all look good weather-wise and the fish are in, so give us a call and come catch some albies and beautiful bass. Although it is blowin like stink, the albies are literally foaming in the finally clear water of Montauk. They had been here before Earl but hard to find since. The bait is super thick as are the bluefish and what seems to be just afternoons, the bass. Labor day is gone and so are the crowds. Ahhh!!
Have a few days free the middle of next week and a few at the end of the month. So far, with the way the bait is, it looks to be shaping up as a very good fall!

The crazy Bass blitzes of earlier in the week have slowed down but we had a great day of Mahi fishing on fly yesterday. Had a few shots at Bluefin with one good boil on our junk, but pretty slow. Mahi on the other hand were very aggressive with dozens of bites and some great jumps and filets for din din. Nothing very big but fun nonetheless!!

Just huge clouds of rainbait in MTK today!! And yes, the proverbial bass blitzes!!
It was rough and I had 3 small boys out so couldn't stay on them unfortunately but my buddy got a 30 pounder on fly right next to us we moved to the calm water to catch 100 small bluefish. We did pull a 12 pound blue and a few small bass before that yacky feeling took over the boat. That kinda bait means one thing, albies will be here within the week!! Bluefish photo to follow. Bluefin-Bass-Bluefish OH MY!!

A week in CCB chasing truly ridiculously big Bluefin that we couldnt land many of, was bookended by some really great Bass and Bluefishing out of Montauk. After a rough ride back to the inlet night before last, Joe Dimenna landed he personal best of 27 pounds along with Adam (highest rated US POLO player in country) with a 22 on Fly. HUGE bluefish on every cast for an hour or so including two 10 pounders on the same plug!! Matt Sacks hooked some real big ones the day before we left with his 2 pals as well.

Heard of some good Bonito fishing just 30 miles east so should be any day now!! Just had saturday cancel but will be out on Sunday. Have found that low light has been the ticket. Lotta reports of Bluefin not far from Montauk as well...

Hope all are well and just wanted to mention that FALL Montauk dates are still available but the best ones are going pretty fast and should be full in the next few weeks

Summer Bass Gorging on Silversides and Little Herring

We have been having some great fishing out East lately with bass feeding on sand eels, silversides and little herring. We have been finding the fish feeding nicely on top in Montauk, Fishers, and around Plum Island. With all of this bait around, I have high hopes for little tunas to start popping in some of the spots that we have had them in years past. When the tide is moving, the fish are biting.

Midsummer Days Bass

As we meander into the heart of the summer, we have begun to fish further to the east both on the flats boat as well as the 23'. Fishing was suprisingly good on the 5th as I fished with friend and angler, Dave Wanamaker from NYC. We caught some nice fish in the last of the outgoing tide and were treated to a nice nuclear submarine sighting. We had a great morning and were happy that the weekend's heat had not hindered the fishing grounds.

We'll be back at it this week and weekend. We'll be reporting back with pics and tales from the H2O. Stay tuned and keep your eyes peeled for early tunoid like explosions. I know I'll be watching intently.

Week in review

the usual week in my world. Tuna fishing out of Montauk with some crazy Bassin at Block, Jbay 2 days with crap fishing cept for about 10 minutes of monsters crashin Bunker. The rest of the week on the flats, which was glorious. Truly love that shit. Had perfect weather. solid fishing with one tide usually better than the other. Got jammed into some low tides that sucked for a bit. Weekend off to take kids to Camp! Wish I were George Jetson, cause all the driving makes my back feel like a jackhammer raped me without so much as a peck on the cheek..Had a killer weekend with Kerry Hefernan and his Lovely wife Grace. Did well on flats friday and killed everything we caught. Ate Porgy sushi, Bluefish Ceviche, Striper, Welk,Clams, Oysters and (you ready for this??!!) 2 Sea Robins in a bouillabaisse. All self harvested and most on the fly! (welk wouldnt take the fly for some reason..)
One last week on flats and then off to Key West for the Permit..

Fished out East on the flats again yesterday with Josh Gruss, Scott Willard, and soon to be seasoned veteran, Max Willard. It was a great day weather-wise and the fish cooperated really well to produce quality fishing through most of the day. With a little tinkering, we soon had discovered the right fly to dangle and were catching bass anywhere from 20"-30". So not as many large fish as we have had in past weeks but nobody was complaining as we watched these fish open wide and eat 15' from the boat in truly gin clear water. No doubts that we all slept well with wide with smiles last night.

As Andrew said, have been fishing more east. Fish are super grabby and still thick as shit. Had some clouds for a change been the guys stuck with it anyway and still hooked a mess of em. At one point we saw dozens of fish tailing and diggin on the sandeels. No pictures from that day as it was so dark, but with concentration and quick casts, Aaron Garvey and Alex Powers got it done! Havent seen a ton of tailers so was super psyched. Been sticking with the unpressured flats and it has been totally paying off. can't wait to get out there again. Have a few days in JBay which was slammin today again. more later..

Moving Day . Beasts to the East.

With the flats to the West starting to warm up just slightly, I have moved the flats operation a bit East and it has paid great dividends. With the fishery around Cutchogue and North Sea just starting to wain, we set out on Monday not sure exactly what to expect. Cha-ching! Billy Lewis and I had what reulted in a 20 fish day (6 hours) and thank you email reading, "Captain - maybe the best day for me ever on the flats.... thank you
thank you thank you......It was THAT GOOD...... I am in la la land still...." That is third time this year that I have heard such response. It makes me so happy to send people to lala land and is always an indicator of a great season. These bass were going way out of there way on Monday to massacre the fly. It was truly silly and we doubled over in laughter each and every time that the rod doubled over. Come on out to Lala Land, it is good, indeed.

Sooo lucky with the weather. Tony and Jeff (of Delaware Trout Guide
fame) treated me to some excellent fishing and catching yesterday
under bluebird skies and so many perfect casts. They needed to be
fed, and feed them they did. Some with such subtle takes, I
couldn't believe they ate it! Ahhh, If I were stuck in a strange time-
warp- groundhog- day type scenario and had to choose which one day to do over and over again (other than the
obvious birth of my kids) I would chose a day just like yesterday.

Memorial Day Weekend, Quite Memorable.

Wow, what a weekend of fishing. With suprisingly few boats around and bright sunny days, we had superb flats fishing everyday. Phillip and Alex Powers caught a ton of fish, with the largest going 24 lbs on the Boga Grip. When Alex landed that fish, we all exhaled and started giggling like children. So fun! The following day Alex brought his friend Mikaela out for her first day of fly fishing. Having never done it before, she proceeded to hook and land 2 quality striped bass on the fly. She hooked and lost a couple more as well. It was so cool to watch. Nice work Mikaela! You did a great job. Until next time...

Well, It has been quite a week. From insane flats fishing to 30
pounders on fly in 70 feet of water, to nothing but Bluefish days...
Cinder worms, crazy shallow water popper fishing and extremely
bizarre weather. jeez I hate full moons sometimes. Fished literally
day and night both here and in Peconic Bay. Saw whales, sunfish, a 50
pound drum, seals and some amazing bird life. slept in my car twice
and used 1000$ worth of fuel. All the while shooting three actor
photo sessions and selling an apartment in Brooklyn. I think I am
going to sleep now. Great to see everyone and appreciate the
buisiness, look forward to seeing many more this week!!

Peconic Flats Inundated With Quality Bass

All week, we have continued to enjoy fishing for large flats bass in Peconic bay. Rarely do we go a day without at least hooking one really scary big strong bass in shallow water. Today, new flats addict and friend, Charles Cacippo, lost one in strong current that surely went 20#. We did manage to stay buttoned up with some beautiful fish in the 10-12# range. Guiding when there are this many fish around is a true delight and by far my favorite way to spend a day working on the water. It is the greatest cinema to sit up on the platform and watch these fish react to the fly, currents and contours of the flat. This past Friday was amazing as well. Old friend, Alex Powers, was feeding them like a jedi master as we were seeing them high in the water column from pretty far away. One of our better fish of the day looked like a dwarf next to his buddy that he was swimming with when he ate. He looked like a runt until we got him to the boat. 31" runt...
Can't get enough of it. Come try it in June. We'll fish a little further east to the same fish as they follow those ideal water temps. Fresh flats await. Tight lines. -A. Derr

Look at these fish. Have been getting fish over 20 pounds on fly every day for the last 10 days. It seems there was not alot of bunker, so the big fish were eating on the silversides, a rare occurence for such a long period of time. all on the surface popping and swirling. Finally getting some bunker into the mix as well. Wish I took more photos but this I clanged. This is the first day off I have had in weeks and it ends up it wasnt that windy this morning after all. I do have some time Sunday morning that just freed up and tomorrow (weds) after that next weds and friday the 26th and 28th. hope all are well

The fishing has only gotten better. This 24# slob capped a great week of flats fishing on Sunday. She ate in 2-3' of water, 20' from the boat and tore off a most of the spool before we managed to pole after her and regained control. Plenty of 10-20# fish out there right now. QUite a day and a great Cup this year! 52 boats, hundreds of fish
caught, and a Trophy for biggest Bass on a fly for Marty Cannon and
Dave Collier. Lotta running but managed a dozen fish. Biggest for
Dave was 18 pounds and 23.5 pounds for Marty! thanks guys for coming
out!

Stars Align, Stripes Follow.

Every now and then, the stars align and you have a great angler on board when the fishing goes off. Thursday was just so, as my old friend, Benji Halsell, took advantage of the stellar light conditions, light breeze and plethora of really quality sized striped bass; fresh arrivals with lots of sea lice and plenty of spunk. We had fish moving on the flats from 9 am, when we hooked and lost our biggest fish of the day, until 5pm. We left at 5pm while the fish were still pouring, but the light was getting tough. In truth, any day when we have had the light, we have found great numbers of fish on the flats. Leading these fish properly and then watching their body language react to the strip is where the skill lies in catching them. It is as delightful to guide this way as it is to fish this way. I will never grow tired of watching these fish in 2' of gin clear water as they track on the fly, gills flaring, backs dark. Nothing beats it for me. Come judge for yourself this spring and early summer. Dates Available.

Richard Rosen and Carmen Cavalerri braved some ridiculously cold conditions yesterday for some of the best fishing I have seen in a long time. Hours and Hours of non-stop hook ups. These guys are seriously hardcore and fantastic anglers. They were incredibly gracious enough to got to the dock for lunch and let their pussy guide warm up before he started to cry!

Today Kerry Heffernan and Terry B spanked em good with glass calm conditions, super clear water and some serious donkey bass sipping and slapping the surface. Unfortunately commitments didnt get us on the water till after 9, yet it was pretty damn cool....

Manhattan Cup tomorrow so wish us luck!!

Tough light on the flats today but we (myself, Arthur Tasker and Bill, pictured), managed to get this solid 30 inch fish over a light bottom in skinny water around 2pm. We saw some truly behemoth fish that definitely saw us first. It really gets the heart pumping to see 20# bass shallow like that. With proper light conditions we would have gotten a bead on them earlier and put a few more in the boat. All said, we were happy with the fish we caught in difficult conditions, with Bills fish winning best of show. Bluefish and weakfish around as well.

Peconic Bay Flats Improving Daily

We have more and more quality fish showing up daily and the chance to catch a 20# bass on the flats is a reality. You'll see the big boys out there in 2-4 feet of water as well as a lot of smaller fish. My friends Bennet and Kenny got their first taste of Northeast flats fishing on Wednesday with good results (see photo) while Sam Sifton crushed 'em on Thursday and Kerry Heffernon caught a 32" on Friday. Just a quick report to let you know the quality of fish around JBay already. This fish was caught on Capt. Bryan Goulart's boat on a size 1 clouser and an old orvis 8 weight. A best for Jim Chanko and really a Striped Bass of a lifetime. Over 26 pounds, It is always nice to see the bigguns eating flies, let alone a small fly. I happen to be giving a boat ride at the time, to a writer, to retrace the steps of George Washington on the 220 anniversary of his inauguration as our 1st President. The route went from ElizabethTown, NJ to Wall Street. There were no Striped Bass caught, of any size...

Peconic Flats Wake Up Early

May 1st officially marked the start of the flats fishing season for us. This is the most fun and most rewarding way to catch these critters. There are a lot of good sized stripers in Peconic Bay already and they are eating well. There are squid, alewives, and sand eels scattered throughout the Bay giving bass an opportunity to let their guard down and forage heavily after the trip up from their winter haunts to the south. Fresh fish covered in sea lice are arriving daily, just bolstering the already solid action. Perfect conditions on Saturday allowed us to get shots at hundreds of fish and the opportunity to put a bunch in the boat for a quick photo and a safe release back to the water for the chance to fight another day. While we were fishing out of New Suffolk, Alex Powers and Bella took advantage of these premium conditions to produce some quality catches.

Many flats days still available in May and June. Come East and get in on the action...

Thursday was blowing so we got a few (and a bluefish) but not super
and we packed it in earlish. Friday was gorgeous, but we did not find
them biting so well on the incoming tide. Had a handful of bites but
the spring jitters/winter rust was in the house so didnt land that
many. Kids/Real Estate on Sat but Today was non-stop. Big fish
popping on the surface for 9 hours that we were on them. A bit picky
and a bit windy in the AM but it laid down and it was supercool.
lotta doubles and cool visuals too. Have I mentioned how happy I am

good things to say about a one-day

fishing trip handled for him in the

New York City area last November by

Brendan McCarthy of Urban Fly

Guides (917-847-9576; www.urbanfly

guides.com). They fished the New

York Bight and Jamaica Bay for

striped bass and bluefish and went on

to find some bluefin tuna. We found

Larkin’s report so intriguing that we

followed up with a phone call for

more details.

“In November, stripers are your

main target in this area, though there

may still be some big blues around,”

Larkin said. “The typical approach,

when the tide is right and the fish are

showing, is to cast flies to them.

When nothing is visible, you probe

rips and deeper holes with spinning

gear until the fish show again.”

Larkin says that on this particular

morning, sand eels were everywhere

and he and his fishing partner caught

numerous striped bass up to 32

inches, as well as bluefish, both on

the fly. “Around 10 am, Brendan re-

ceived a call from another guide re-

porting bluefin tuna within sight of

the New Jersey coast. Brendan’s been

in the business a long time and has a

great working relationship with other

guides in the area. Brendan asked my

fishing partner and me if we wanted

to try for the tuna. It was a long shot,

he said. Since we’d already caught a

lot of stripers, we chose to head to-

ward New Jersey.

“After a short run, we chased pods

of tuna for the remainder of the after-

noon. Hovering birds would tell us

where the fish were likely to surface.

The fish would show suddenly and

briefly, just long enough for one cast,

or two at most, with spinning gear. It

would have been almost impossible

to fly fish because of the speed the

fish were moving. Still, it was very

exciting to follow birds and chase

pods of fish this way. We saw large

fish, too. Some would have weighed

200 pounds or more. It was a spec-

tacular sight, seeing them break the

surface in pursuit of tiny sand eels!

along the Jersey shoreline near Sandy

Hook. But seeing them and catching

them are two different issues. If your

goal is to catch fish, I’d recommend

concentrating on the stripers, which

are almost always abundant, and the

blues, if they are still around.”

(Postscript: Larkin cautions that the

best guides in this area are heavily

booked, especially for Montauk in

the fall. When we talked to Larkin in

early April, he was already making

his plans for fall fishing. At press

time, we called McCarthy to check

his availability for 2010 and found he

still has openings for spring (his sea-

son typically begins in late April),

summer and fall fishing. He told us

he’s planning to focus more on the Ja-

maica Bay fishery near New York

City this season and less on the wa-

ters around Montauk, which he de-

scribes as “a circus when the fish are

running.”)

It has been many many years since I remember fish blasting on the
surface all day in the back of the bay in the spring. This was a
first for Rene from Paris, and after a bit of a learning curve on how
to hook and land Stripers, this fishing was non-stop (unless he chose
to stop and just watch the action which he liked to do often). Not
sure why we didn't do it earlier, mostly cause I thought it wouldn't
work cause of the cold water, etc.., but we switched to small fly-
poppers. Grey, calm, and sprinkling all day (thus the non-abundance
of photos) He eventually called it about 1 as we lost track of the
fish at about 9AM. Man, days like this that are unforgettable. At
times, they were coming up and rolling like Montauk, cept of course
we were the ONLY boat on them.. Same thing today, but didnt last as
long. Looks like I have some free days next week, and possibly as
morning half on Sat, but will be out there everyday thru Monday in
the meantime.. Hope all are well!!

Although I'll never figure why, since it makes no scientific sense,
the wind kicked up as usual in the afternoon yesterday. Had a 2pm
start time, and luckily it wasn't really whipping, so we got some fish
and had fun. Still haven't caught a bluefish that people had been
talking about lately but got a bunch of bass on flies and shads. A
nice one for the table as well. Clean, strong fish. Water still around
56 so it is all uphill from here. Have still not figured out why most
people don't seem to want to fish in April with weather like we have
had but have a few trips this week and will keep you updated! Sorry no
photos but my battery was dead, arg!

Hey Hey,

Finally got the boat in today and what a beautiful day. After the
usual flat tire, etc.. we hit the water for a few hours and some
respectable fish. No bluefish (that i have been hearing so much
about) but again, was just a few hours. TONS of bunker in the bay and
nice clear water, which I have to say was a bit shocking after all
that rain.

Fish are being caught regularly in and around Jamaica Bay!! Who would've thought, after that brutal winter, that we would have an early spring? All this warm weather has really gotten things moving early with even some Bluefish blitzes this week (um, that's cool right?) What it does mean that the bait is here, the water is warm and the Bass are feeding! Some 30" fish, some smaller, but its all I need for now!
Also, Wanted to let everyone know that myself, Frank, Kerry, Tom C, Bryan, Derr and the rest of the Redbone gang will be on ESPN2 Saltwater Sundays this coming weekend April 18th. 8 AM. Get your DVRs set as it is some of the best Montauk TV I have seen, Documenting the 2009 Redbone/FCA tourney.

A bang up day!!

Was flat, sunny and fishalicious!!
Caught fish all day long. Morning wasn't excellent but picked at em
but after about 1hour into the incoming the Fish started blasting
sandeels and anchoives on the surface!! Was almost Montauk-like.
Really good shit. Some up to 32" and some monsta blues (not too many
tho) going to Redbone for the weekend but will be back on Monday.
Heard it is supposed to be 60s next week. Schweet...

Damn Bluefish got me then took my Boga Grip with him!!

Well!! My first day on the ruff and tumble waters of Brooklyn left me
wet and bloody but thrilled at the fishing!!
Max and Tomas from Milan were on their way back to Italy after running
the Marathon yesterday. Tomas barely needed help down the dock....
Didn't need to go far or wait long before the first fish was aboard. A
10 pound bluefish. They were into it, I was worried it was going to be
all teeth. Luckily that was only of about 4 greasers caught and 2X on
the bass to 12 pounds. No poachers and only 3 other boats seen all of
the 4 hours we were out. Very sweet. Engine running like a top after
throwing my life savings at it and a yummy porterhouse at Lugers made
for a schweet day!!

Thanks to a few tips from Capt Paul Doxon, we had a solid day today
with Joe Labs. Not alot of surface action but after that rain, it's
understandable.

Looking forward to November in JBay. Boat is in, fixed and gassed up
and ready to get on em!
Looks like good winds all week and hope for a temperate late fall. If
all goes as planned, will fish atleast until Dec 15

After a heavy 4 day blow, the fish were going strong yesterday
afternoon and the average size much bigger than the normal blitz size.
I have a few days free next week before heading back to Jamaica Bay in

Before the wind....

It has been going off the hook this week before the blow. Bass have
finally arrived enforce and there are some big ones in the blitzes.
Albies were feeding like bluefish with many fish missing the fly,
etting pricked, and still coming and taking it in the end. Not sure
if it was because of the upcoming Noreaster coming and they were
feeding hard knowing it was coming, but was very cool. Hooked 10 in
an hour on Weds with Luis from Caracas. Really fun stuff. This blow
is killing me and tides are 3 feet above normal. hope it gets through
sooner than they predict and we can get back out there soon. Looks
like I am staying so have Oct 26, 27, 29 and Nov 1 open now. After
that I will be moving back to Jamaica Bay so if anyone wants to get
out near the city it is only 12 miles from downtown. Have a bunch of
days free there until Dec 15th. Go get em anyway you can as winter is
comin!!!

Been having some killa Albie and Bluefish action and although the Bass
are not in like they should be, there are alot around. Even hooked a
25 pounder out of an albie blitz today right next to the boat!! Have
had some big blitzes since Wedsnesday but not all the time Even some
good reports of Skipjack seen and caught. The cool air is gettin it
going and have a feeling it will go way into November. Have even
decided to stay an extra week because of it so if anyone wants the
25-29 or beyond let mr know!!

Found the Albies that were foaming big time. Got 4 in no time and then we had to head in as we had been looking for Bluefin earlier (saw a few). Lotta Albies, no boats, and eager to eat!!! I have alot of days free before sept 11th....The first day they show in our area and I have another broken XI2 9wt. yuck....
